Half The World Away
“Another one about leaving cities. Doesn’t mention telephones or rain, though, does it? It could do. We done that the same day as we did Talk Tonight in Texas. The drumming bit that comes in on the brushes, our ex-drummer had these two brushes which he was looking at and going, ‘What do they do?’ ‘Well you do that with that one and you play it like that…’ And after about two hours I got annoyed with him and threw him out of the studio. So I played the drums on that track, and the bass. I like some of the lyrics: “Scratching around in the same old hole/My body feels young but my mind is very old…”
- Noel.
This is one of the first songs I teach my guitar students to play.

Now You’re Nobody - Embrace

For some reason, people love to hate successful acts. With a Number 1 album that went double platinum in the UK back in the late 90’s, Embrace surely had targets on their back for all to shoot at.
They did eventually return to Europe’s good graces again with their 2004 album Out Of Nothing. Chris Martin threw the band a single as a thank you for supporting his band (coldplay) when they were just starting out. Luckily they struck gold again.
The band is working on a new release for 2010. For now, listen back to this tune from their amazing debut, The Good Will Out.

Monday Morning 5:19 - Rialto

The greatest spy band of all time. I am still amazed they haven’t done a Bond soundtrack.

The Submarine Song - The Supernaturals
The Supernaturals are a band that define 90’s brit-pop for me. Although dismissed by the british press, they had quite a few top ten hits with “smile”, “the day before yesterday’s man” and “I wasn’t built to get up”. Most bands from that era feel dated, but the Supernaturals still sound new and quirky to me. It’s probably because they didn’t take themselves too seriously, which is really saying something when compared to our current ultra brooklyn/hipster culture.
The band is since long gone.. but James McColl (frontman) now writes the songs for a band called the Hussy’s.

Miss America - Blur
This song always sounds great on a rainy day. Makes me want to leave my pajamas on.
